Hello all,
We talked about introducing a wiki into the Dargon project and I've
gone ahead and set one up. It doesn't have much information in it, but
I think it's a good place to gather information that:
a) everyone has the potential to edit without involving a webmaster
b) is easy to browse
This by no means replaces the Glossary. The glossary is great for
instant definition and relation of items to stories. I see information
from the wiki potentially migrating into the glossary, but the two
have different, specific roles.
The forums are also a good place to find information, but it can get
messy with discussion threads. I think the forum is awesome for
discussion of items where we want to keep records of those discussions
and to also encourage interaction with the public.
So, to look at the Codex, follow this link: http://dargonzine.org/codex
To edit items under the Dargon or DargonZine headings, you will need
to enter a password. For the moment, that password is dargon08 (that's
a zero eight at the end, btw)
To see how to edit things, check out this link: http://www.dargonzine.org/codex/PmWiki/BasicEditing
As for technical details:
this wiki is file-based, not database-based, so the pages that get
created are actually stored on the disk, where they are much less
likely to get corrupted.
It has some neat other features like an e-mail notifier that can e-
mail an admin (or admins) whenever someone edits a page. It also has
an extensive revision system. Even if someone tries to delete the
contents of a page, the revision system keeps the old content. Right
now the expiration of versions is like 10 years, so I think we're good.
The password-protection system has the potential to be hooked up to a
database. I see myself eventually linking that into the DZ database so
that passwords for the writer menu also apply to the wiki.
Right now the dargon password only lets you edit and add pages to the
Dargon and DargonZine areas. Everything else is locked out to people.
