bell
Description Unit of time measurement, analogous to an Earth hour. The day is divided into 10 bells of day (first day bell at sunrise) and 10 bells of night (first night bell at sunset). Actual lengths of bells vary seasonally and depending on latitude, and the length of day bells and night bells are inversely proportional, making accurate timekeeping virtually impossible. Each bell is divided into 30 menes, but they are even harder to estimate. Common speech includes idioms like a summer night bell and a winter day bell for a short period of time, and a summer day bell and a winter night bell as idioms for a longish period of time.
